So here I am feeling guilty and dumb. Suddenly words that once meant so much feel empty. I feel empty. Lost. Confused. I close my eyes. "Is it over yet"? I ask, his hands held lightly over my ears. "No, not yet" he whispers. I can feel his gaze even though my eyes are closed. His soft lips press firmly and confidently against mine. I keep my eyes closed to savor the taste of his kiss. My mouth curls into a smile. I open my eyes. He's gone. Current Mood: contemplative
It was nearing midnight when they finished their meals and left the restaurant. It was chilly outside and Ben folded his jacket over Kara's shoulders taking in her scent as he did so. He couldn't help but think of the times they spent together years back. The walked in silence back to Kara's apartment which was just a few blocks away.
"It was nice seeing you, Kara" Ben said abrubtly at the door delibritly not making eye-contact.
This was a complete change from how things had been flowing at dinner. Kara felt uncomfortable.
"Yeah....I mean, you'll have to stop by again next time your here on business" Kara struggled to find the right words.
And with that, Ben looked up and stared at Kara and muttered under his breath, "forever and always" and walked away into the night without a proper goodbye.
Kara bowed her head. She knew what those words used to mean to her and Ben and it was painful for her to think about.
The jacket that had been keeping her warm fell off her shoulders. She picked it up holding it close to her. She glanced down at the ground and noticed...
It had obviously fallen out of one of the pockets.
Why she ran into this room was a mystery, maybe even fate. She was looking for something, anything, as some form of relief from what had occurred three minutes ago. She thought that this time, it was for sure going to happen. She’s been waiting two years for Ben to break free and finally realize his feelings for her. Together, right there in the dimly lit restaurant, their shared feelings would be revealed like a scene from a fairy-tale romance. The night was going wonderfully. Ben greeted Kara at the door of the traditional Italian restaurant with a friendly kiss on the cheek. He was wearing black pants and a sleek buttoned down, baby blue shirt that accented his curly, pitch-black hair. Kara was stunning in her green dress, knowing that it was Ben’s favorite color. In fact, Ben was blown away by her. The sheen of the gown made her eyes glisten the way the surface of the lake behind them did as the setting sun’s rays bounced over the ripples. Kara’s red hair curiously played with the green shades of the satin creating a balance of color chaos and harmony.
Conversation flowed easily, as it always did. Ben shared about how his “fresh out of college” job was unexceptedly going quite well. It was something he had always worked for, but never really believed would come true. Kara spoke about her few final courses she was to begin in a month or so. It was strange that their lives had separately taken them to this robust Italian city and furthermore, that they were able to keep in contact to meet on this very night. Surely things would go right this time.
